How these dates work

Your T2 corporate return is due six months after fiscal year-end — but the tax itself is due earlier: two months after year-end for most corporations, three months for most Canadian-controlled private corporations claiming the small business deduction. That ordering surprises people every year: the payment deadline usually lands before the filing one, and interest runs from the payment date, not the filing date.

HST follows your filing frequency: annual corporate filers generally file and pay three months after year-end; quarterly and monthly filers, one month after each period ends. T4 and T5 slips are due the last day of February for the previous calendar year, whatever your fiscal year-end. Some situations move these dates — confirm yours with your accountant.

Common questions

When is my corporation's T2 return due?

Six months after your fiscal year-end. A December 31 year-end means a June 30 filing deadline. The tax itself is due earlier — two months after year-end, or three months for most Canadian-controlled private corporations claiming the small business deduction — so the payment deadline usually arrives before the filing one.

What HST deadlines does my corporation have?

It depends on your filing frequency. Annual corporate filers generally file and pay three months after fiscal year-end; monthly and quarterly filers file and pay one month after each period ends. Annual filers whose net tax tops $3,000 also owe quarterly instalments through the year.

What happens if I miss these dates?

Interest starts on unpaid balances the day after the payment deadline, and filing late adds a penalty of 5% of the unpaid tax plus 1% per month — more for repeat offenders. The fix is boring: a calendar that knows your year-end, and books that are ready before the deadline instead of after it.
