Whether your tutoring is HST-exempt depends on what you teach
Tutoring is one of the genuinely tricky HST areas for small businesses. Private tutoring of an individual in a course that follows a curriculum designated by a school authority is generally exempt. Enrichment classes, test-prep, hobby instruction, and corporate training often are not. The same tutor can therefore have exempt and taxable revenue in the same month.
That mix drives everything downstream: whether you must register, whether you can claim input tax credits on your materials and space, and how the revenue has to be tracked. Tutoring businesses that grew from one-on-one school support into camps, courses, and workshops are the ones most likely to be offside without knowing it. Have the mix reviewed once, then let the bookkeeping keep the lines separate.
Common questions
How is package revenue handled?
Prepaid packages are recognized as sessions are delivered, not all at once.
Do you work with incorporated tutoring businesses?
Yes. Incorporated tutoring companies are a fit.
Is tutoring HST-exempt in Canada?
Sometimes. Private tutoring of an individual in a course following a school-authority-designated curriculum is generally exempt, while enrichment programs, test preparation, and non-curriculum instruction often are not. Because a single tutoring business can have both, the safe approach is to have the specific programs reviewed rather than assuming the whole business is exempt.
Do I need to register for HST as a tutoring business?
It depends on how much of your revenue is taxable rather than exempt, measured against the $30,000 small-supplier threshold. Exempt revenue generally does not count toward it. This is precisely why the exempt-versus-taxable split needs to be settled before the threshold question can be answered.
