Small payroll, same rules

A business with three employees faces the same remittance deadlines, the same source deduction calculations, and the same year-end slip requirements as one with three hundred. What it does not have is a payroll department, which is why the job usually lands on the owner or gets bolted onto a bookkeeper who does it once a month.

The exposure is real. Late source deductions carry a penalty, and unremitted deductions are the kind of debt CRA pursues personally against directors.

Included, not an add-on

Payroll sits inside the same flat monthly price as your bookkeeping and your tax filings. It is scoped on the same call, based on how many people you pay and how often, so there is no per-run fee and no separate payroll subscription to manage.

How a pay period runs

You confirm hours or salaries for the period. CPP, EI, and income tax are calculated for each person, along with the employer portions. Your team is paid on your schedule, the remittance is prepared and sent to CRA by its deadline, and the whole run posts into your books automatically.

At year-end the T4 and T4A slips come from those same records, which is why there is no reconciliation exercise in February.

Ontario employers

If you employ people in Ontario, the Employer Health Tax applies above an exemption threshold, and WSIB coverage is mandatory in many industries. Both are handled as part of the service. Our guide on WSIB for Ontario employers covers who needs coverage and how premiums are set.

Common questions

Is payroll an extra charge?

No. Payroll is included in the flat monthly price and scoped on the same call, based on how many people you pay and how often. There is no per-run fee and no separate payroll subscription.

How small is too small for a payroll service?

There is no minimum. A business paying two or three people faces the same remittance deadlines and slip requirements as a much larger one, which is usually why it is worth handing over.

What happens if a remittance is late?

CRA charges a penalty that increases the later the remittance is, and unremitted source deductions can be pursued personally against directors. Keeping remittances on schedule is part of what the service is for.

Do you handle Ontario EHT and WSIB?

Yes. The Employer Health Tax above the exemption threshold and WSIB premiums where your industry requires coverage are both handled as part of the monthly service.
