Payroll for Ottawa employers
taxifi is based in Ottawa, so this is our own market. The businesses we see here run on mixed teams: salaried staff alongside subcontractors, seasonal headcount in the trades, hourly crews in hospitality, and professional firms where a few people carry most of the payroll. Every one of those adds a way for a remittance or a year-end slip to go wrong.
Payroll runs as part of the same service that keeps your books and files your corporate tax, so a pay run posts into your accounts as it happens, and the T4s at year-end come from the same records rather than a separate system that has to be reconciled first.
Staff on the Quebec side
Ottawa is the one Ontario city where this comes up constantly: you hire someone who lives in Gatineau. What sets the deductions is the province of employment — the establishment the employee reports to — not where they live. An employee who lives in Quebec but reports to your Ottawa office is generally on Ontario rules.
It changes if you open a location on the Quebec side, which brings Quebec deductions and RL-1 slips into the picture alongside the federal ones. Either way it is worth settling before the first pay run rather than discovering it at year-end, and we work it out as part of onboarding.
The Ontario layer
On top of CPP, EI, and income tax withholding, Ontario employers face the Employer Health Tax above an exemption threshold and mandatory WSIB coverage in many industries. Both are handled as part of the monthly service. Our guides on the Ontario Employer Health Tax and WSIB for Ontario employers cover the thresholds and which industries require coverage.
Employee or contractor
Worker classification is where the real exposure sits. If CRA decides a subcontractor was an employee, the unremitted source deductions and the penalties land on the business, not the worker. Our guide on T4 versus T4A covers how the distinction is drawn, and the late remittance penalty covers what being late actually costs.
Switching provider
The switch is free and can happen mid-year. We collect year-to-date figures from your current provider so your T4s are complete for the full year, and there is no gap in remittances.

What clients say

“So grateful I don’t have to bang my head against the wall navigating other bookkeeping systems, trying to create my own, hunting for a report and then trying to figure out what it actually means. Taxifi speaks in language I understand, and because of that I have a much better handle on, and feel more in control of, my finances. The Taxifi team is amazing and responsive, and the system itself is so user-friendly. I genuinely feel like they’re invested in my success. Highly recommend!”
